Free Books for Kids

Many of the children in our schools do not have books at home. Between 81 and 99% of these students are eligible for the free breakfast/lunch program; therefore, there may not be room for books in a stressed family budget.

The Tutors for Kids program is in its seventh year. Through June 2019 we have given over 100,000 new books to children in classes of the schools we serve. These are new books, many of which are chapter books with fiction and non-fiction content.

We work with First Book, who distributes new books donated “in-kind” by publishers. These books are available to groups, like Tutors for Kids, who give them to children “in need” to keep as their own. For many children, it is their “first book.” The books currently cost between 75 cents and one dollar for shipping.

Tutors give books to the students in two ways:

1. Books for the Bag – Periodically throughout the year – Tutors reward students with whom they work regularly and who are making progress or achieving goals. The goal is to have the students earn a book a month.

2. Books for the Break – Twice a year – ALL students in EVERY classroom in which our tutors work receive a book – at the winter holiday and at the end of year.
